I wish the Tamihana bump on the road was not there. I don't even live right next to it but I can still hear every single time someone goes over it. If they go too fast my house shakes. I feel sorry for the people that live closer to it. Walkers and bikers often treat it like a pedestrian crossing. All that needed to happen was the tree by the rose garden to be pruned more regularly so the line of sight was better down the road. And level off the curbing so that people with their little kids on bikes don't have to slow down for so much to help their kids get up the driveway curb, but rather have a flatter bit that they could ride straight over.
With what you've done, walkers and bikers seem to think they have the right of way. To make it worse, bikers obviously think that because it's also classified as a bike track they take priority. I often walk and I always move to the very edge of the footpath for other walkers and bikers but the bikers don't get out of the way at all and I regularly have to move right off into the long wet grass to avoid getting hit by cyclists that insist on staying in the very middle of the path.

I wonder if maybe you would get more "buy- in " from people if you had a broader perspective in your approach.Perhaps if you viewed the town layout like a wheel,and invested in shared footpaths on the main spokes ie. dual footpaths to the town centre on the following roads: Station,Farmers,Peria,
WaharoaW&E,Tawari/Findlater,Tower,Mangawhero &Burwood .
If you want to encourage more cycling and walking,I suggest more people would use these amenities if there is a purpose eg going to town.
The loop proposed is fine for recreation, but it is just that.....a loop.

I wish there was a pedestrian crossing, put in by Waka Kotahi, but on advice from the council, so that people from the retirement homes on the west side of town, can safely get to the town centre.This is decades overdue!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wonder if NZRail and the Council could work together on having a fenced cycle /pedestrian path between the two Southern railway crossings,in Firth Street, so that people can either walk or cycle a loop up that section of SH27.Very few people cycle on that stretch of road carriageway because it does not feel safe.In addition, many of the trees along that strip have fallen/are falling down,and sit for ages,creating a mess,and making it impossible to mow properly. (Kiwirail can probably put up a boundary fence to keep people excluded from the track.)

For a pedestrian to go on the start of Meura street Broadway end as the kids who walk to town would be far safer with one there as I have seen so many kids have near misses as heaps hoon around there from Broadway to Meura street.

Who was the creative thinker who likes to waste public money on this ridiculous idea. The humps through the drive are dangerous for walkers I have fallen over twice on the ones on tamihana street. I live on rata street and very few cyclists can be seen on this road. Speed hasn't slowed and the hoons are still doing wheelies. I don't see how this has improved anything at all except for the expense of it all and the eye sore of painted signs and bollards all over the place

I wish the route created a loop that traverses the length of Burwood Road from Banks Road to Broadway, turning left to allow access to Matamata Primary School, heading down Meura Street to Tui Street, up Tui Street to Tainui Street and on to Centennial Drive. Centennial Drive would ideally be for active transport and walkers only. I wish the route would cut out the #1 to #2 section. For people exiting Matamata Domain, install a traffic cushion or pedestrian crossing across Meura Street to ease the way into Tui Street, and another on Tainui Street to ease cyclists’ access to Tainui Street (where they could use a bike rack, eg, in the Farmers car park, and then walk around the central business district).

I wonder if the kerb buildouts at the intersection of Rata Street and Burwood Road could be removed or modified, as long as Rata Street is clearly signposted as a shared road, and has paint marks or other signal showing cyclists they can turn before they hit Burwood Road (keeping Rata Street at 30kph). Can cycling please be factored into plans to upgrade the intersection of Burwood Road / Broadway / Tower Road / Mangawhero Road.

I wish that the current bike network that the MPDC is trialing in a small part of town, could be extended to cover the whole town so that people could access town for work and shopping reasons and students could get to schools safely. I also wish to support the submission of Transition Matamata.

The tamihana speed bump is absolutely ridiculous and unnecessary
The majority of the community want it gone and from reading these comments so do the residents close to it
I have driven from the drive onto tamihana street across the ‘ramp’ and it is not car friendly

As long as you have plenty of signage there is no need for so many speed bumps which are going to make the neighbours protest against the whole idea of making bike routes. As a cyclist you are used to having to deal with many roads and intersections, and just a few speed bumps here and there won't make a difference to me.

I wish there were a crossing on Meura St to go from the Domain to Tui Street, and on Tainui St from Tui Street East, to get fro m the Domain to the Civic Centre, as there are bike racks there to park close to town. And the worst of all, Firth St and Farmers Rd, but I know it is a highway and its harder to do.

When are you going to put safer crossing where there is heavy foot traffic near schools such as Farmers Rd with Smith St, across Farmers Rd, and on Peria Rd with Smith St, across Peria Rd? Many students cross these intersections daily.

It would be more practical to have a big loop circuit going all the way up Burwood from Rata St to Broadway, and all along Broadway from Burwood to Meura, then coming down on the East side of Meura, down to Tui St and then along Tui St to Tainui and down Tainui to Centennial Drive. This will include Matamata Primary in the big route, which is what the Principal there wants, and make the route more useful for students to get to that school. The path outside Matamata Primary on Broadway is already wide enough to be a shared path, it just needs some paint to make pedestrians and cyclists aware that it s a shared path. The Broadway stretch to Burwood also needs painting for the same reason, otherwise, cyclists might feel that they have to cross the road to be on the left. The Fitzgerald portion can stay, as the Tawa St portion, to increase connectivity.
Burwood Rd is wide and has plenty of room to have a shared path or cycleway going up from Banks Rd, not just from Rata St.

A smaller circuit could include the whole of Centennial Drive, connecting to the bigger circuit on Broadway outside of Matamata Primary, with a smaller circuit made by using the crossing on Tawa St to get to the Domain and the existing path in the Domain to get to Meura St.

It is best to avoid including the Tainui and Broadway corner, where currently you have to dismount because of the cafe on the corner and shops, as that is not practical because it is as busy as any place in the middle of town, and close to the Civic Centre, where you could park your bike to go into town via the Farmers carpark, or just walk up Tainui St.

I do not think the kerb buildout on the north side of Rata Street makes a safer passage for cyclists onto the shared path on Burwood.
It diminishes the space available for turning onto the path, as it is a right angle with the path, and makes the road narrower.
It does not serve the purpose of reducing the speed of cars coming from Burwood onto Rata because it is on the left, exiting Rata.
It forces the cyclist to be in the middle of the road AND have to stop and turn at right angles, exposing them for longer to traffic coming into Rata from Burwood. And that traffic will be forced to be closer to the cyclist because of the buildout on the South side of Rata.
Therefore both buildouts are dangerous to cyclists. If you want to make it safer, just keep the 30km speed limit and include clear signage that it is a shared road. Also, include signage for cyclists coming from Rata that they are allowed to go to the shared path on Burwood. Otherwise, they might go around the buildout, onto Burwood Rd.

I wish Centennial Drive was simply a walking/cycling/micro-mobility track and I wish a pedestrian connection to the other side of town could be considered! I also wish that connecting the schools safely could be of highest priority.

More cycling & walking in our suitably flat town will have both short and long-term health benefits to the community in so many ways - but evidence shows that people are not going to be cycling in large numbers unless they feel safe to do so. There is still a great deal of work to do and I wonder if council is up to the challenge and can handle the negative feedback that comes with proposing any change.
