Construction of new Ashes Walls - We're currently creating a new Ashes wall at Matamata Cemetery for future internments. All remaining plots in the existing wall are reserved. Foundation works are due to start around Monday 6 November and this will take about 4 weeks. We're building the first of five Ashes Walls in February/March 2024 using Hinuera Stone.

Burial options available at Matamata Cemetery include:

Children's section For burials of children aged up to 16
RSA Section For burials of Returned Servicemen, identified by a plaque. Contact the RSA to organise a grave and plaque. The plot and burial is organised through Council..
Headstone, full plot, single berm Full size plot, identified by a headstone
Lawn Cemetery Plaque Full size plot, identified by a plaque. Available in lawn cemetery section only.
Recumbent Desk Full size plot, identified by a plaque on a raised concrete slab

 

Ashes interment options include

Ashes wall Ashes are sealed in a memorial wall and identified by a plaque. There is a charge to place ashes in the wall.
RSA Ashes Wall For ashes of returned servicemen, organised through RSA. Identified by a plaque.
Ashes plot Ashes are buried in cemetery plot, identified by a headstone
Memorial Garden Ashes may be sprinkled in the Memorial Garden and a small plaque placed around the garden to remember the deceased

 

Up to four lots of ashes may also be added to a previous burial plot

 

Hours of Operation - Interments

 

Summer (From 1 October to 31 March)

Monday – Friday: 10am – 4pm

Saturday: 10am – 3pm

 

Rest of The Year (From 1 April – 30 September)

Monday - Friday: 10am – 3pm

Saturday: 10am – 3pm

 

Burials arranged later than 3pm in winter may mean the contractor is backfilling the grave in the dark, this is an unsafe practice and Council does not permit it.

 

Interments on Sundays and Public Holidays (excluding ANZAC Day) are permitted between 10am and 1pm, provided the timing is negotiated and approved by the Contractor.

 

Interments on ANZAC Day are permitted between 1pm – 3pm provided the timing is negotiated and approved by the Contractor.
