Growth Projections

To ensure our long term planning is based on the best available information we regularly review our growth projections for the District. As part of the 2021-31 Long Term Plan we approved the Population projections 2018-2051 for Matamata-Piako District Council which you can read here. For the purposes of the Long Term Plan Council adopted the Medium population projections.

Since the adoption of the LTP, Matamata-Piako District Council has joined Future Proof  which is a subregional group of councils, iwi, and central government partners. The Future Proof councils all use the High Scenario population projections for the Waikato Region prepared by the National Institute for Demographic and Economic Analysis (NIDEA). To align our planning with our neighbouring councils, Council adopted the High Projections from NIDEA at its meeting 13 July 2022. The full report to Council is available here.

Following the 2018 Census Data release, NIDEA published two reports:
2018-base Population, Family and Household, and Labour Force Projections for the Waikato Region, 2018-2068

The full datasets on which the reports are based on are available here
