Paw and Order: see you next year!

We’ve wrapped up our Paw and Order survey with over 1,000 people sharing their thoughts on dog rules across the district. From market chats to online comments, it’s been awesome hearing your stories.

Dogs certainly sparked plenty of conversation! Most people supported dogs being allowed on a leash in shared spaces, with 61% in CBD areas and more than 70% on the Hauraki Rail Trail. Dog exercise areas were another hot topic. While many people are happy with the spaces we have, there’s strong interest in creating more off-leash areas. Some also mentioned the cost of creating and maintaining new spaces as an important consideration.

Some people felt more could be done when rules aren’t followed - like when dogs are off-leash or mess isn’t picked up. While we can’t be everywhere at once, clear rules help set expectations and make it easier to solve problems when they do arise. Antenno is an easy way to share issues with us - and every report helps show where follow-up is needed.

Looking ahead, elected members will review your feedback this month, and then we’ll be back in early 2026 with a draft of the updated rules. Until then, thank you for being part of this kōrero. Keep an eye out for Digby, our paw-some Paw and Order mascot, next year!
