State of the Environment Reports 2020-21 and 2021-22

Matamata-Piako in the Waikato RegionMatamata-Piako District is one of eight full, and four part districts that make up the Waikato region. Our district is approximately 175,000 hectares. It is bounded by the Kaimai Ranges to the east and is well known for its dairy farming heritage and thoroughbred racing industry.

Our district encompasses many diverse environments ranging from the Kaimai-Mamaku Forest Park to the 10,200 hectare Kopuatai Peat Dome, a globally unique wetland. A major attraction in our district is the Hobbiton movie set from the world famous Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit movies. The district is also home to historical landmarks such as the Firth Tower and the Mokena geyser, as well as leisure pools, mineral spas and numerous walks on the 952 metre Mount Te Aroha.
