Location and proximity to key markets
Location is at the heart of our advantage. The district is located in the centre of the ‘golden triangle’ of Auckland, Hamilton and Tauranga. Matamata-Piako is well-connected to the rest of New Zealand and the world through a network of road, rail and air links. Nearly half of New Zealand’s population live within 100 kilometres of Matamata-Piako, making it an ideal base for business. Four major State Highways (24, 26, 27 and 29) pass through Matamata-Piako. These highways are a vital part of New Zealand’s road transport network and they form a link between the district and the rest of the country.
Matamata-Piako offers a strategic location with central accessibility to large population centres. The district is located just 90 minutes from the country’s largest population centre of Auckland and a one hour flight from Wellington, the country’s capital. Matamata-Piako is also located within easy driving distance of Tauranga, a fast-growing coastal city, and Hamilton, where the University of Waikato is located.
Matamata-Piako is an export centre with a good road and rail network, close proximity to domestic and international airports, ports of Tauranga and Auckland, and a well-developed warehouse and cool storage sector. The district is served by several railway lines owned and operated by KiwiRail, including the Kaimai Tunnel which links the eastern Waikato with the Bay of Plenty. These existing rail channels provide opportunities to transport goods to key markets and ports.
