Matamata connectivity

About the Matamata Connectivity project
Matamata Connectivity
We have some projects coming up to improve connectivity in Matamata for pedestrians, cyclists and micro-mobility users, to help make it safer and easier for people to walk, bike and ride around Matamata and access the town centre.
Background
Back in 2023 we held the Bike Day Out at Matamata Domain and asked the community to test a range of road treatments, including a bike route, sharrows, kerb build outs, a shared bike/pedestrian path concept and different road crossing styles. We also asked the community where you think we should prioritise crossing points. We then reviewed your ideas and feedback and created a plan of connectivity improvements to work through as funding allows.
What we’ve done so far
Thanks to the support of external funding and co-funding from Council, we successfully installed a new pedestrian crossing on Meura Street in mid-2024. With renewal funding, we also managed to renew and widen a large section of the path through the Matamata Domain. The rest of the shared path is due to be completed as part of the new Matamata Domain playground construction.
Coming up
In the next couple of months, thanks to external funding, we are able to progress more of the connectivity improvements that received positive community feedback. Work will include a zebra crossing on Tainui Street in front of the Matamata-Piako Civic and Memorial Centre, kerb extensions and crossing improvements on Hohaia Street by Matamata Domain, a central median crossing on Burwood Road and a new footpath on Burwood Road, which will link to existing footpaths. The aim of the new infrastructure is to improve connectivity for pedestrian and cyclists for those travelling on the eastern side of town that travel through to the CBD. Work is expected to start early May and last six weeks, exact dates to be confirmed shortly.
Here are some images and descriptions showing what we have planned for each location.
Tainui Street pedestrian zebra crossing in front of the Matamata-Piako Civic and Memorial Centre. This project also includes a new mobility park, yellow tactile pavers for the vision-impaired, kerb build outs to make pedestrians crossing more visible, the removal of one accessway into the Council car park (still accessible from Tainui Street and Tui Street) plus two new parking spots.
Hohaia Street crossing improvements near Tawa Street. This includes kerb extensions for safer crossing, a path to link the crossing point to the Matamata Domain shared path, yellow tactile pavers for the vision impaired.
Burwood Road crossing point and new shared path. This image shows the new central median crossing to be built on Burwood Road, with kerb build outs and yellow no parking lines for safer crossing, yellow tactile pavers for the vision impaired and a new 2.5m shared path on Burwood Road. This path connects to existing paths and creates an east-west connection to the Matamata town centre.
