Pedestrian crossing coming to Meura Street, Matamata
From week commencing 10 June, we will be constructing a zebra pedestrian crossing on Meura Street, near Matamata Domain. Last year we asked the Matamata community for feedback about where they think safer crossing points are needed most, as part of our Matamata Connectivity project. We are using this feedback to help us plan for new or improved crossings as funding allows. Thanks to Transport Choices funding from Waka Kotahi, we have the opportunity to deliver one of the more popular requests that would’ve otherwise not been possible with Council funding alone.
The new crossing on Meura Street will provide a safer crossing point to Matamata Swim Zone, Matamata Domain and the Matamata Domain playground which is soon to see a significant upgrade. Construction is expected to take about two weeks. Although there will be some disruption to street parking during construction, driveways will not be affected. Traffic management will be in place.
The Matamata Connectivity project was identified through the 2021-31 Long Term Plan consultations. Its objective is to provide additional infrastructure to allow for better walking and cycling connectivity within Matamata, which could include crossings, pedestrian traffic islands, footpaths, etc.
