Regional initiatives

Matamata-Piako District Council is involved in various regional and partnership initatives to promote shared services between local authorities, reduce costs, and promote the development of best practice.

Waikato Mayoral Forum

Since its formation in 2012, the Waikato Mayoral Forum has been collaboratively and successfully pursuing its goal of working together to develop tangible benefits for the region through greater local government co-operation.

The forum – made up of mayors and the regional council chair – has initiated a series of workstreams aimed at improving joint planning, economic development and local government efficiency.

Waikato Means Business

Of all the places in New Zealand, there is none better positioned to grow even more strongly in the future than the mighty Waikato. But it won’t happen unless we have a plan and we work together to execute it.

Waikato Means Business is the name of our region’s 20-year economic development strategy, released in February 2014 and created with input from civic, business and Māori leaders.

Waikato Plan

The Waikato Plan is a joint plan by all the councils and agencies in the Waikato to give them one collective voice about important issues that affect us now and will affect us over the next 30 years.

The Plan is based on two principles:

1. Together we are stronger. Collaboration builds strength and understanding, fills gaps, and cuts duplication.
2. To succeed as a region, all parts of the Waikato must be as successful as they can be.
