Further notice of election and poll and declaration of elected candidate

Nominations have closed for the 2025 triennial local authority elections. Listed below are details of the confirmed candidates for Matamata-Piako District Council.

Where elections are required, they will be conducted by postal voting using the First Past the Post electoral system. Voting will open on Tuesday, 9 September 2025, and will close at 12 noon on Saturday, 11 October 2025.

As the number of nominations received did not exceed the number of vacancies, Gary THOMPSON is elected unopposed.

Māori Ward Poll - Matamata-Piako District Council

A poll will be held in conjunction with the above elections to confirm whether Matamata-Piako District Council electors wish to keep or remove the Māori Ward as part of Matamata-Piako District Council’s representation structure. The outcome of the poll is binding and will determine whether a Māori Ward will be retained for the Matamata-Piako District Council elections in 2028 and 2031. The First Past the Post (FPP) Electoral System will be used for this poll.

Enrolment and special voting arrangements

Matamata-Piako District Council residential electors who are not listed on the final electoral roll for these elections can enrol up to 5pm on Friday, 10 October 2025 by calling 0800 36 76 56, visiting the Electoral Commission website www.vote.nz, by texting your name and address to 3676 to get a form sent to you or by email request to This email address is being protected from spambots. Matamata-Piako District Council ratepayers who are not listed on the final electoral roll for these elections can obtain an enrolment form from the Matamata-Piako District Council Office, 35 Kenrick Street, Te Aroha and enrol up to 4.30pm on Friday 10 October 2025. Online applications for ratepayer elector registration can also be made at www.electionz.com/ratepayer

Special voting documents will be available during normal office hours from Tuesday 9 September to Friday 10 October and between 9am and 12 noon on Saturday, 11 October 2025 from any of the Matamata-Piako District Council offices at 35 Kenrick Street, Te Aroha, 11 Tainui Street, Matamata or 56-62 Canada Street, Morrinsville.
