Owning a dog comes with real responsibilitiesābut also plenty of rewards. Whether youāre new to the district or a long-time dog owner, weāre here to help you understand whatās required and where to find the information you need.
Registering your dog
All dogs in the Matamata-Piako District must be registered with Council.
- Dogs must be registered before they are 3 months old
- Registration must be renewed every year by 31 July
- Your dog must wear its registration tag in public
- Failure to register your dog can result in a $300 infringement fine plus the registration fee
Registering your dog helps us reunite lost pets with their owners and supports animal control services that keep our community safe.

If your dog and contact details haven't changed, you can pay online using a credit or debit card. If any of your details have changed, please complete one of the forms below before making your payment.

If your dog and contact details haven't changed, you can renew your dog's registration online using a credit or debit card.
Once your payment is processed, we'll post your dog's tag will be sent to you. Please allow 4 weeks to recieve your tags.
We are currently taking payments for the 2026/27 year. Registration notices for the 2026/27 year are now being sent out. If you have not received a renewal notice by the end of June please contact the Council office on 07 884 0060
Please note that a surcharge applies to credit and debit card payments
Need to pay in person? You can visit any Council offices between 9am-4.00pm, Monday to Friday.
