Description
Matamata Pickleball officially launched in February this year at the covered courts at Matamata Primary School, thanks to the efforts of local community member Carol MacLeod and her team of supporters. The launch event was a fun evening filled with activity and laughter, drawing over 40 participants of all age - highlighting the district’s growing enthusiasm for the sport. The goal of the project was to create a welcoming, inclusive space where anyone in the community could try pickleball for free.
The initiative came to life with the support of the MPDC Pride of Place Community-Led Initiatives Grant, which Carol successfully applied for at the end of 2024. The grant funded the nets, balls, and paddles for the four courts, and our Community Development and Partnerships team assisted Carol in promoting the launch to the Matamata community. The team were proud to support the launch event in person - running the community BBQ and bringing along the Pride of Place kete filled with games and resources to enhance the evening.
Pickleball was held for free at Matamata Primary School for seven weeks, and since the launch the interest in the game has continued to grow, alongside a strong sense of community connection. Anyone interested in giving it a go for free can contact Carol on 027 316 3494 or visit the Matamata Pickleball Facebook page for updates and more information.
