![]() | Cycleway Network for Matamata |
Submitted by Gord Stewart for Transition Matamata Community Facilities |
Full description of idea:
Transition Matamata proposes that Council develop a comprehensive network of cycleways using existing walkways and footpaths and with on-road bike lanes. This proposal is submitted under the 'Community Facilities' category, but also applies to 'Parks and Open Spaces' and 'Roading'. Once a system is in place for Matamata, learnings from the work could be put to use in Morrinsville and Te Aroha, thus providing similar opportunities and benefits for those communities.
The cycleway network would be low-cost and easy and quick to implement. In most places, all that is required is signage. In the case of shared footpaths, some widening may be needed (on-road bike lanes could be used in the short term if funding necessitates). A one-page proposal detailing the plan and a map showing suggested routes has been provided to Council. Interested members of the public can receive a copy of the proposal and map by sending an email to info@aquas.co.nz.
Council has acknowledged the value of cycleways in the District Plan (section 3.8 'Transportation') since at least 2009, but no concrete action has yet been taken on it. Now is the time to do it!
How this idea will benefit the community:
A cycleway network offers many benefits to the community:
- Safe travel to and from school for students.
- Safe travel for adults for commuting to work, going to the store, doing errands, visiting friends.
- A safe and pleasant network of paths for families with young children to explore around town and connect to the Hauraki Rail Trail.
- A safe and appropriate welcome for cycle tourists using the Hauraki Rail Trail and connecting on to the Waikato River Trail.
- More residents on bikes can help reduce demand for vehicle parking in the centre of town.
- Regular physical activity is an important part of a healthy lifestyle (cycling is a convenient way to fit activity into the daily routine).
- More cycling (instead of driving) is a practical way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions which contribute to the growing climate crisis.
- This sort of amenity would add to the livability and quality of life in Matamata (and could even help attract new residents looking for a great place to live, work and play - bringing new skills to the community and bolstering the economy).
