Full description of idea:
The council could develop a rural discovery centre which aims to inform locals, particularly children, and visitors about the significance of the major local industries such as dairy/farming, horse breeding/racing, beekeeping and so on. Each industry which is showcased can have a dedicated area with fun and interactive displays showcasing facts about how the industry works and the significance to our district.
The discovery centre could also have a cafe attached which focuses on serving local produce and a gift shop which sells locally made bi-products of the dairy and beekeeping industries.
How this idea will benefit the community:
Entry for locals could be free or low cost. It could be utilised as an excursion destination for local school children to learn about our district. It would also offer a rainy day activity for children, which there is currently not a lot of options in the area. During the school holidays the centre could offer free or low cost actives and events.
For visitors/tourists it offers another attraction for them to attend in the area. They would learn about the industries that have shaped our district, and would hopefully spend money in the gift shop and cafe, stimulating the local economy.
This would also create local jobs during construction and for the day to day running of the centre.
