Keeping our roads safe

Matamata-Piako is a rural district where moving stock is part of everyday life. Council supports safe stock movement while protecting road users and maintaining the roading network.

Moving stock on roads

Stock can be moved on public roads when necessary, but this must be done safely and with care. You are responsible for ensuring stock are under control at all times and that road users have clear warning.

In some situations, a permit is required before moving stock. Providing advance notice helps Council manage safety risks and minimise disruption.

Fees may apply for stock control services, including permits and impounding.

You can find the fees for the current year here. Fees and charges are reviewed on 1 July each year.

Wandering stock

Stock on roads can create serious safety risks for drivers and the animals.

If you see wandering stock, contact Council as soon as possible. Animal Control Officers respond to these reports and work to return stock to their owner (in accordance with the Impounding Act 1955). Unclaimed stock is held in the pound and if not claimed by the owner after notification in the local newspaper, it may be sold at auction to help recover costs.
