Commercial areas
Council rubbish and recycling collections for commercial areas will stop from September
As part of our goal to make Matamata-Piako waste free by 2038 with our new kerbside collection service from September 2023 - we are no longer collect rubbish and recycling from commercial areas.
There are a number of challenges with collecting rubbish and recycling in commercial areas - for example, accessing wheelie bins outside commercial properties is logistically difficult (e.g. with parked cars and slowing traffic through main streets etc). The rubbish and recycling needs of businesses/organisations also vary widely e.g.
- Bars and restaurants produce lots of glass and food waste
- Retailers produce lots of cardboard
- Offices produce lots of paper
- Most premises create general waste (milk bottles, lunch scraps, hand towels)
We sought prices for commercial collections as part of the tender process for the new contract, but the costs were high and would result in services that were not fit-for-purpose for the wide range of businesses and organisations in our commercial areas - for example, the fortnightly rubbish collection is likely to be insufficient for most businesses.
We believe most business owners will be able to arrange a private collection to meet their specific needs at a much lower cost than Council can provide.
As a result, all properties in the commercial areas will need to arrange their own rubbish and recycling disposal from September 2023.

Kerbside collection is a targeted rate - that means only those who receive the service pay for it.
Properties in commercial areas have only been rated for kerbside collection for July and August.
