Weather updates - Cyclone Tam

19 April
8.33pm - Water supply restored - Tills Road

Water has now been restored. Thank you for your patience while our team worked to resolve the issue at the water treatment plant. If you notice dirty water we recommend turning on an outside tap for a few minutes to flush through any sediment or air bubbles, which may cause discolouration to the water. If that does not solve the issue, please contact us on 0800 746 467.

All roads are open

If you’re driving through the Kaimai Ranges, please take care. It’s still windy and there could be debris on the road. Streams in the hills are rising from the rain, so there might be some surface flooding today. Our team is out this morning checking areas that are more likely to be affected.

Powerco is responding to downed power lines in our area and may need to close some roads while repairs are being made. Traffic management will be in place to keep everyone safe.

Te Aroha walk bridge closed

The Te Aroha walk bridge is now closed, from today (Friday 18 April) due to high river levels. The walkway bridge will be re-opened when the water recedes to a safe level - this will likely take several days and we'll keep you updated.

17 April

5.03pm - Seddon Road is now open. Traffic management has been removed from State Highway 26 and Waihekau Road. Please continue to drive with care.

4.26pm - Weather update

The wind has definitely picked up, and our teams have been out all day responding to fallen trees and road closures.

We’re also in for some heavy rain, so if you can, please stay home and off the roads. High winds and debris are already causing issues, and conditions may worsen.

When safe, our teams will be clearing debris and branches to the side for now, with a full clean-up planned for next week once we’re back at full capacity.

While it’s a long weekend, we’ll still have teams on call to respond to urgent queries. If you come across a fallen tree or road hazard, give us a call on 07 884 0060. If you are in immediate danger, call 111.

3.59pm - A tree has fallen outside 543 Old Te Aroha Road and is currently caught in the powerlines. It has not fallen onto the road at this stage. Powerco have been advised, and they are aware of the situation. Please take care if you're in the area.

2.35pm - Firth Tower is now closed due to a power outage and will reopen on Saturday 19 April.

2.16pm - Gordon Avenue has reopened to traffic. The large fallen tree has been cut back and moved to the side of the road. Full recovery and removal will take place over the next week or so. Please continue to take care when passing through the area.

1.11pm - Tree and power lines down – 1038 Manawaru Road (approx. 2.0km north of Wardville Rd).  A traffic management crew is on the way. Please take extreme care if travelling in the area.

11.44am - A large tree has fallen over onto Gordon Ave between Churchill Ave and Bosson Road.

11.23am - Te Aroha Mineral Spas and Domain House Beauty are currently closed due to a power outage. They are unable to host bookings at this time and phone lines are also down. We will update you when we regain power, apologies for any inconvenience caused.

10.30am - Strong winds are causing trees, branches, and even empty rubbish bins to blow onto roads, creating hazards. Please avoid travel if possible - especially on tree-lined roads. If you must drive, slow down and keep a safe following distance from the vehicle in front. If you come across a fallen tree on our roads or council land, please give us a call on 07 884 0060. If you are in immediate danger, call 111.

 16 April

2.30pm - We have a Strong Wind Watch and Heavy Rain Watch over our district. Tie down any loose items outside - like the trampoline. Wet roads can be dangerous, if you have to go out drive slow and be patient. Keep watching MetService New Zealand for the latest weather updates - metservice.com/warnings/home

Severe Weather Watch

If you believe people or property are in danger, call 111. If you see issues that you think Council needs to check, please log them in Antenno or call us on 0800 746 467.

How to get prepared

Make a household plan that includes your pets, in case you need to evacuate.

  • Have a grab bag with essential items ready to go.
  • Be prepared for possible power outages and check emergency supplies. In a storm you could be stuck at home for up to three days.
  • Clear debris and leaves from drains and gutters to help prevent surface flooding.
  • Secure items like wheelie bins, trampolines, outdoor furniture, boats and trailers. Bring items inside or tie items down that could move in strong winds.
  • Check on your friends, whānau, neighbours and anyone who might need your help, especially those who have already been affected by recent flooding.
  • Stay up to date with the latest weather warnings from MetService - https://www.metservice.com/warnings/home
