Why water reform matters

Did you know a lot of New Zealand’s water and wastewater pipes and treatment plants were built ages ago and need replacing?

Fixing them isn’t just about replacing the old stuff - most of them need significant upgrades to ensure better quality drinking water and to protect our environment. This is good for everyone - but it all costs a lot of money and requires specialist skills that are in short supply. Many councils can’t do it alone.

That’s what Local Water Done Well is about – it's the government’s way of making councils review how they deliver water services. Councils can choose whether they work together with other councils or a consumer trust or make changes to how they run things now so that water services is completely separated from other council activity.

Choosing a future model for delivering water and wastewater services to the community is a big decision - but it’s also a big opportunity to make things better for everyone. You can learn more or sign up for updates on this topic at mpdc.nz/waterdonewell
