Swim Zone Matamata leisure pool is now open!
The temporary roof over the indoor pool has been completed and has re-opened for the public to use once again.
Last week a small group gathered for the pool opening where Mayor Adrienne was able to thank those involved in its construction - NZ Temporary Structures, JSwap, BECA and Epic Systems.
The Swim Club's head coach Graeme Laing received special mention due to the impact the indoor pool closure had on the swim school. She also acknowledged "the time put in by the working group who were tasked with finding a suitable solution to replace the old roof that was delaminating and found to be earthquake prone."
A working group of community representatives and Councillors, led by Sport Waikato, explored options for the facility when the roof over the indoor pool was removed in late 2021. Council discovered that the roof structure over the pool didn't meet the minimum modern earthquake building standards and one of the laminated beams was showing signs of failure.
Council agreed with the working group's findings, and decided to put a 'medium term solution' in place, meaning that the Matamata community can continue to access an indoor pool and swimming lessons all year round, while we take on the longer term challenge of planning for a new or upgraded complex that meets the future needs of the community.
The spa pool will remain closed a little longer while the grouting work is being completed.
