Long term vision - Morrinsville Rec

Thanks to all who took part in our online surveys and public meetings over 2021 and 2022 about the future of Morrinsville Rec. It was wonderful meeting with Ngāti Hauā, the regular users of the Rec and hearing all the responses about what people like about Morrinsville Rec, what's missing and your overall vision for the ground. We worked with park design experts Resilio Studio to turn measure the space and see what combinations of field/pitch and building layouts could fit where and working out what options we have for now and in the future.
How Morrinsville Rec looks now
The 22ha park is Morrinsville’s largest public green space, currently catering to cricket, football, tennis, swimming and polo. It also has Swim Zone Morrinsville, an off-leash dog exercise area, children’s playgrounds, a mini skate bowl, motorhome parking and dumping facilities, the old tennis club building, the old campground, a residential unit, car park, public toilets and the Morrinsville River Walk. It also includes the land between the railway and the historic park boundary which we’ve only recently acquired, creating further development opportunities. Historically it's been used by a variety of indviduals and groups, however at the moment large areas of the park are under-utilised and have been for a number of years.
Western field
You’ve told us you want to make sure our big events like the A&P Show, Motorama and Fireworks can continue and there's space for a range of sports. We’ve aware sport needs change over time, so have come up with a range of ways the Western field could be laid out and used.
Eastern field
Cricket and football and popular sports in Morrinsville at the moment. Here's a way we can better use the space to meet the growing needs of both sports.
Built facilities
You’ve told us you’d potentially like to see an events centre, a revamped swimming complex and more playgrounds/youth areas here in the future, this is how we see these structures could be laid out.
Vegetation and vehicle/pedestrian plan
You’ve told us you want better links into town, a perimeter track and a plan for vegetation/plantings. This is how we could possibly make it happen.
Recreation spaces
You’ve told us you want a dog exercise area, motorhome spot and space for the currently popular sport Ultimate Frisbee. Here are some different ways we could make this happen.
The survey is now closed, but check out all the ideas and feedback we received from our public survey – thank you to everyone who took part.

It’s free (not the pools)
Indoor rec centre, indoor pools with better pricing for family and passes where you can return in the same day. Water slide.
The idiots who don’t leash their dogs in the areas where they’re supposed to be leashed.
Better hours for pool use - only available in summer. Would be good to have indoor pools year round
Indoor rec centre with activities for kids (and adults) , cafe, indoor pools. More fun!
Its close proximity to the town
Freedom Camping spaces available or lease an area that could be used by the NZMCA Membership 365 days of the year
Morrinsville is a Motorhome Friendly Town and the NZMCA membership (112000) would like a location where they could stay overnight and support the Town ideally the association would like to lease an area within the Recreational Park that members could park a stay, but this would need to be available 365 days of the year.
This Recreational Park seems to be under utilized by leasing an area to the NZMCA would see a portion used all year round that would bring income into the Town and the Park. This income could be used to improve facilities without any cost to the ratepayer
Please see above
Off leash area
More bins
A pedestrian/pram/wheelchair access from the car park area on Ave Rd S.
Lights for night use and safety, accessibility from Ave Rd S entrance, more bins and maybe doggy bag dispensers? Something to encourage people to pick up their dogs poop.
A more structured safe space, usable in all seasons, that still caters to the large range of activities a wide open space lends itself to.
It would be amazing if council could ensure the properties backing onto the rev grounds have adequate fencing to keep their animals, dogs specifically, from roaming onto the ref grounds as there is currently an aggressive dog which does this.7
The space is flexible
A better fenced dog exercise area
Covered:heated pool to allow all year swimming
Better pool facilities to allow all year use
Good picnic spot. All year swimming

The peace. I love the birdsong along the river walk and the quite shade. There is always a lovely sense of community as you greet people and stop and chat.
Its lovely the way it is
Maybe a picnic area in the top right corner. Some BBQ and tables under the trees there. Also I think it would be great to reopen the little camping area. There are thousands of people looking for somewhere to park their Motorhomes and this would be a lovely place to stay for a few days.
I think it would be best left as it is. Green space is incredibly important for mental and physical health and it is becoming more scarce as land becomes more valuable. As sections get smaller we need open spaces for our kids to run and play and kick balls around and ride their bikes
It is precious: trees, birds, walking areas
Good areas for adults' exercises, an area for rolling skating for all ages. This city in Colombia has implemented outdoor gyms in every park for adults:

More rubbish cans around
To keep a balance between the noise made by humans and the peace from the river
Please, have some enclosed areas where the dogs can run free without the danger of causing an accident to kids and senior adults
The walking area for dogs
Nothing
Nothing
The walking track that is dog-friendly and swimming pool for exercise in summer.
An indoor swimming pool so it can be open all year round.
Tidy up the walking track, new planting, steps/boardwalks, etc
Current use is great - an area for a variety of leisure and recreation activities. It just needs some attention as certain areas have become neglected.
Great big open space so good for events like amp.
I also really like the river walk
Better swimming pool facilities- ie a roof and heating so it can be used year round, along with better kids facilities
A destination playground like what is at Hamilotn lake would be amazing too
Just needs more to do
Destination playground including cool cycle tracks/loops for kids. Better pool.
More horse shows, cross country course. Permanent something for teens-tweens like skate rink or go cart, climbing rock wall, huge flying box, something to get them outside active and gathering.
That it has more permanent horse use - not just polo. Active activities for teens
Cross country course for horses
the river walk and dog park.
its such a great space but not used well.... I think a indoor pool complex would provide jobs for the community all year round and regular swimming all year eiynd. my family and I travel to Te Awamutu or Hamilton
an all year round pool complex
the bowl. it's so ugly. maybe a bigger basketball space there?
an all year round pool complex similar to te awamuru
I love the space it's somewhere you can go with family and pets and just get away from day to day business it's so peaceful
I think most things ate here it just needs to be developed to a bigger scale
As above gernally everything's there just needs to be upgraded to a larger scale
larger scale in terms of family space, I think the swim zone area needs to be developed first and have inside/outside pools, to make it a yearly activity for everyone even a small scale water park with fountains etc, the playground needs to be alot bigger something similar to the big park in Waihi, river walkway needs to be completed. Could even encorporate some kind of events centre to make the rec grounds the place to go for everything morrinsville. Upgraded tennis rec grounds like tennis pads
Everything takes time and we need to start somewhere, I suggest start at the pools and work from there, I know alot of people in morrinsville that travel afar especially during winter to go to the inside pools.
I love the space and having my dogs and kids just be able to run around and play
A better playground
Some form of water park for the summer
Swim zone needs to be upgraded and there needs to be a water park that kids can play in
A better playground and swing area
A area designed for a secure off leash dog park ?
Will be amazing to have the walkways connected to the river walk from other parts of town

Frequently Asked Questions
Over the last few years we’ve been approached by a number of groups or individuals wanting to do various activities at Morrinsville Recreation Grounds. One of the challenges has been a lack of an overall, long term community vision for the space.
When we recently consulted on our Parks and Open Spaces Strategy it was clear that Morrinsville residents were passionate about ‘The Rec’.
When we consulted on our 2021-31 Long Term Plan, there was strong support for developing a long term vision to guide future development and use of the grounds.
