Another Long Term Plan proposal that received wide support from the community in 2021 was establishing Resource Recovery Centres in Matamata and Morrinsville.

What's been done so far

The original plan was to start work on a Resource Recovery Centre in Matamata in 2023/24. We were planning to establish this in a new location, which would reduce the current hazards around access from the State Highway and mean the existing site could continue to operate as usual while the new centre was established.

However, early investigations highlighted that the planned location would not be suitable, and that the existing site remains the best option. 

What is happening next

We need to investigate alternative options for the Matamata Resource Recovery project - for example, if it remains as the existing site, how can we provide safer vehicle access? Or are there other sites we could consider. Research into options will begin in 2023/24. At the same time, we will likely investigate options for the Morrinsville Resource Recovery project, as it may be more practical to change the order of these projects (i.e. make a start on Morrinsville while we are still working through options in Matamata)
