Morrinsville River Walk

This pleasant River walk begins from Holmwood Park housing subdivision, meandering along the river side. The walk is mostly flat making it suitable for most walkers.

Starting at the Morrinsville Recreation Grounds (Avenue Road South entrance), this pleasant walk follows the river along the rear of the recreational grounds, through stands of mature trees. The walk features a stand of native Totara trees (identified as significant in the Matamata-Piako District Plan) - these can be found near the track in the south east corner of the recreation ground. This short walk is great for the whole family, with loads to explore including a small waterfall. The Morrinsville Recreation Ground is a perfect place to spread out a picnic blanket and relax after your walk.Linking west to east or east to west in Morrinsville.

River walk extension

This walkway is part of a series of walks linking the Morrinsville Recreation Grounds (in the west), sections of the Waitukaruru Stream and the Piako River, ending at Holmwood Park on the eastern side of Morrinsville.

The walkway begins on the south side of the Studholme Street / Waitukaruru Stream road bridge (at junction with Eynon Road). Following along the grazed margins of the Waitukaruru Stream, the walkway then passes through a section of large oak trees that were planted over 80 years ago as a  timber resource for building railway carriages. Access across this section of land is courtesy of Greenlea Meats, who manage the adjacent farmland.

The walkway crosses underneath the railway line linking Hamilton to Tauranga , and continues along the Waitukaruru Stream to the large 45 metre swingbridge just above the stream junction with the Piako River. Standing on the bridge, the Piako River tributary is 50 metres downstream on the right hand bank.

The walkway continues along an esplanade reserve following the Piako River downstream, crossing underneath the railway line to Waitoa, to a track junction. The left hand track links up to River View Road, whilst the track straight ahead the walk continues to Holmwood Park Drive (Holmwood Park Walk).

Walkers can either follow a route back through the centre of Morrinsville CBD or walk the route in reverse back to the where they started.

This walk is great for the whole family, with loads to look for, including a waterfowl on the river, adjacent paddocks with stock grazing, and bush and river views of Waitukaruru Stream and the Piako River.

Please note the following:

  • There is no public access to sections of the walkway between Studholme Street and River View Road
  • Dogs must be kept on a lead at all times
