Rail fencing extended to improve safety in Matamata

Rail fencing under way in Matamata
We’re adding new fencing along parts of the railway corridor in Matamata to help improve safety and guide people to safer crossing points.
From Wednesday 20 May, our contractors began extending the existing KiwiRail fence along Hetana Reserve between Tainui Street and Broadway. Firth Street runs from opposite Jellicoe Street through to the Burwood Road intersection. And on the other side of the tracks, alongside Swap Park to Burwood Road intersection.
Supporting safer connections around town
The fencing is part of our Matamata inner green route initiative that forms part of our Parks and Open Spaces Strategy 2021-51. This strategy sets out how parks, reserves and open spaces are planned, developed and managed across the district.
A key focus is improving how people move between these spaces. Safer, more connected walking and cycling routes make it easier for people to get around town and move between the places they use every day.
The fencing helps guide people to safer crossing points and separates the rail corridor from nearby parks and reserves. This makes the green spaces people are being encouraged to use, safer.
This stage of the project is funded through an external government grant supporting safer walking and cycling connections across town.

What to expect
Work is expected to be completed by 30 June 2026.
During installation, you may notice contractors working along the rail corridor. Please take care around work areas and follow any signage in place.
Looking ahead
Matamata is growing, and new developments on the other side of the railway are drawing more people into town.
We know fencing will change how some people currently cross the tracks. In some places, it will limit direct access and guide people to safer crossing points.
We are investigating options for additional crossing points, including a possible new road crossing and a future level crossing. These require significant investment and sit outside the current programme of work.
