The meaning behind the new stadium

The meaning behind Te Whare Hui Ora
As we celebrate the opening of the new stadium, there is a deeper story to be told that's woven into the heart of the building - its te reo Māori name, Te Whare Hui Ora. This name was gifted by Iwi as part of the cultural narrative for the facility and reflects both its purpose and the values that will guide those who use it.
Te Whare Hui Ora is a name that carries intention. Each part contributes to a wider meaning grounded in te ao Māori and shaped by the aspirations of the Matamata community.
Te Whare - a place with purpose
Te means “the”, and whare refers to a house, building, enclosure or place.
In te ao Māori, a whare is more than walls and a roof. It is a living space that reflects identity, belonging, whakapapa and community. It is a space that holds people, histories and relationships.
Hui - gathering with purpose
Hui is commonly translated as a gathering or meeting. It comes from an ancient Proto-Polynesian root meaning “to gather together.”
A hui is intentional. It is a place for kōrero, decision-making, learning, restoring relationships and building collective understanding. It represents participation, engagement and the strengthening of social bonds.
Ora - wellbeing and vitality
Ora means life, health, wellbeing, welfare and vitality. It connects to the broader idea of living, thriving and flourishing.
Ora is not limited to physical health. It includes emotional, spiritual and community wellbeing - a sense of being supported and connected.

Te Whare Hui Ora - wellbeing through connection
When these three concepts come together, they form a powerful idea: Te Whare Hui Ora - a place where wellbeing is strengthened through gathering and connection.
The name speaks to a space that:
- prioritises the holistic wellbeing of all who enter
- fosters connection through hui, kōrero and shared purpose
- strengthens relationships across the community
- offers support, guidance and restoration
- upholds values such as manaakitanga and whanaungatanga
These qualities make the name fitting for a facility that brings people together - whether for sport, community activities, learning or support. It is a whare designed to uplift people and create space for connection.
Cultural narrative woven into the design
The meaning of the name is carried not only in words, but also in the visual designs incorporated throughout the stadium. Each pattern contributes to the story of the space.
- Pūhoro (vision panel on the doors) – Symbolises speed, agility and movement, as well as the interconnected rhythms of nature.
- Kaokao (front glazing) – Represents strength, connection and unity.
- Mangōpare (court‑area wall design) – Symbolises strength, determination, leadership, courage and tenacity.
These elements work together to reflect the energy, purpose and community spirit that Te Whare Hui Ora stands for.

Te Whare Hui Ora is more than a label, it is a guiding narrative for how the space will be used and cared for. It acknowledges the cultural foundations of the district, reflects the aspirations of the people who brought the project to life, and sets a direction for future generations.
This facility was built for the community. Its name reminds us that when people come together with shared purpose, wellbeing grows - and that is the heart of Te Whare Hui Ora.
