Got an idea for our community or your neighbourhood? Grant funding is open

Some of the best things that happen in our communities start small — a local event, a shared celebration, a project led by people who care about where they live.

Council grants help support this grassroots mahi/work. They’re about backing community-minded people and groups to turn good ideas into action — ideas that bring people together, celebrate culture, and strengthen connection.

This April, three grant opportunities are either open now or about to open.

Te Kōtuitui Grant

Open now | Closes 30 April

The Te Kōtuitui Grant is now open.

This grant supports initiatives that are largely focused on, or in honour of, Matariki or Waitangi Day. It is open to organisations or individuals who are endorsed by a member of the Te Manawhenua Forum, an Iwi Trust Chief Executive, or a similar representative.

We have set aside $5,000, split across two funding rounds, to support initiatives that strengthen connection through culture and shared identity. The first funding round is open now, with a second round opening on 1 November.

This funding supports

  • Community-led initiatives connected to Matariki or Waitangi Day
  • Activities or events that acknowledge, reflect or celebrate these occasions
  • Projects delivered by, or in partnership with, local whānau, hapū, iwi or community groups

If you have an idea that fits - now’s the time to get involved.

Pride of Place – Community-led Initiatives Grant

Open all year

The Pride of Place – Community-led Initiatives Grant is open year-round and designed for small, local ideas that bring people together.

It is externally funded (not from rates) and is time-limited, with funding needing to be allocated by June 2027. Funding is available now, and early applications help ensure great local ideas don’t miss out.

You don’t need a polished proposal to get started. In fact, the Community Development & Partnerships team can talk things through with you before you apply, helping you shape your idea and check it’s the right fit.

This funding supports

  • Small-scale, community-led initiatives
  • Local activities or projects that help people connect or collaborate
  • Ideas that are practical, achievable and delivered within a short timeframe
  • Projects where a bit of support can make a big difference locally
  • Check out the great community initiatives that have received support here

Got an idea but not sure where to start? Start with a conversation. The team is here to help.

Single Year Community Grant

Opening 9 April

The Single Year Community Grant opens soon on 9 April and supports community organisations delivering projects, programmes or services over a single year.

This fund is aimed at initiatives that provide a clear benefit to the community, supporting wellbeing, participation and connection across the district.

More detail and promotion will follow once the fund opens — but now is a good time for groups to start thinking about their plans for the year ahead.

Why this matters

These grants support the everyday efforts that bring life to our towns and neighbourhoods - often led by volunteers, local groups and people giving their time for others.

They help turn good intentions into real-world outcomes, close to home.

If you’ve got an idea - or even just the start of one - April is a great time to explore what support is available.
