Full description of idea:

I have long thought that Matamata needed more than the Hobbit hole 'I'site to draw people to the town and then go on to Hobbiton. The idea of a full size sculpture of Smaug came to mind and seemed to be the obvious solution, located in an area where there is plenty of parking etc.
Recently the idea resurfaced and I could picture a 'slide' incorporated into the 'sculpture', which would mean placing it adjacent to a playground maybe?

How this idea will benefit the community:

The Smaug Dragon's connection to Hobbiton is obvious, and no doubt they would need to be aware/involved in the process. Having said that they may want to sponsor the construction as part of their advertising campaign, the Weta workshops may even delight in being involved in the design/build - you don't know if you don't ask!
As for local benefit - well it goes without saying that if done well (a super slide) many would want their photos taken with it and so they would hopefully have a spend up in our local shops - as well as going to Hobbiton.
