![]() | Lake for te Aroha |
Submitted by Peter Jager Community Facilities |
Full description of idea:
A 3-5 hectare lake on the south side of Kenrick St. We know well the temporary lake that appears several times each year, but why not a permanent feature of the landscape. Not a new idea and last investigated in 2004, when the feasibility study done indicated this was a viable proposition. The idea of a lake is talked about often. Perhaps it is time to give it serious thought. This newer proposal would involve excavation of the sometimes swampy, and sometimes grazed site to a depth of approx 3 metres, so the lake would have the same depth as the adjacent Waihou River. The lake would be connected to the Waihou river, with inflow approx 150 south of the Coulter Bridge, and outflow closer to the south side of the Coulter bridge. This new proposal addresses two possible issues from the earlier study, the necessary water flow and possible weed growth. This proposal would be beneficial to the effect on the existing flood plain to accommodate water in times of floods, as the proposed lake level would be lower than the existing ground level.
How this idea will benefit the community:
Te Aroha residents live in a very attractive town, the domain and Mt Te Aroha backdrop adding to that. Once downside is the wastelands on either side of the approaches to the Coulter bridge. A lake will enhance the appearance of this area. It will provide extra recreational opportunities for Te Aroha residents and ratepayers of the wider district. A lake would change a rather unattractive piece of weedy, pretty much unused ground into an attractive and useable ammenity. A permanent lake would give visitors another reason to visit Te Aroha and Matamata-Piako.
