Morrinsville / Te Aroha Cycle Trail Extension

Submitted by Rob Haddock

Parks & Open Spaces

Full description of idea:

Let's connect our fellow townships with a cycle trail from Te Aroha to Morrinsville as part of the Great Hauraki Rail Trail. The large corridor beside the existing train track has great potential for making this happen.
There are a number of points of interest along the way. The Waitoa and Tatua factories, dairies(Waitoa and Waihou) and pub (Waihou Tavern), Murray Oakes Scenic Reserve, the herd of cow art in Morrinsville, Wallace Gallery, local eateries, businesses and community facilities. The Te Aroha to Matamata leg of the trail is fantastic and is nearing completion, so why not strike quickly and extend to Morrinsville while the contractors are running hot?

How this idea will benefit the community:

The benefits for the community are significant. Feeling better connected as townships is a benefit. Getting out there and being active for all ages is a health benefit. It is relationship building for families too.
Visitors spending longer in our area, and spending more ($) is a benefit.
Signage could bring historical perspectives as to how the area has developed over time. Therefore, promoting a sense of pride and of belonging for locals, and an insight to the past for visitors.
The benefit for our wider city community beyond - Hamiltonians would savour making the short drive to Morrinsville, knowing they could then ride on a dedicated cycle trail all the way to Waihi township. Seeing the vista of the Kaimai Range in the distance and knowing you were going to cycle to it, then through it, and then beyond it, has an overarching sense of adventure and appeal.
