Pride of Place

Your town centre - a place torelax.play.connect.enjoy.share.

The ‘Pride of Place’ project is about teaming up with our communities to test fun, creative and meaningful ideas that will make your town centre a place you’re proud of and want to spend more time in. Your ideas are the key to the success of this project - they'll form part of a practical action-packed to do list that will be created and delivered by communities and supported by Council. You won’t want to miss out on being part of this!

Matamata

We kicked the project off in Matamata from January - March 2022. Matamata’s Place Plan was approved in August 2022 and we are currently implementing this plan.

Pride of Place is about placemaking - where we turn ordinary spaces into great places. Places that act as a magnet for people to stay longer and keep coming back.

We'll learn by doing - we’ll work with the community to help bring those ideas to life by trying out new or different ideas to see what's possible - and encourage communities to think differently about how the town centre spaces could be used.

We want to test ideas because experimenting is how we'll learn what works - and what doesn't. It'll help us find the winning formula for your town centre. The ideas we test will be temporary, and can help build momentum towards longer term change and investment in the town centre.

Of course community spaces need good roads, parking and rubbish bins. But they also need to be safe. And interesting. And welcoming. Because really great community places are where people gather and connect.
