Recently, our team responded to a wastewater overflow. After several hours of investigation and jetting, the culprit was found to be a blockage made up of wet wipes, fat and other objects that should never have gone down the drain.

While products may be labelled 'flushable', they don't break down like toilet paper and can combine with  other things like oil to create stubborn blockages in our wastewater network.

The result? Wastewater overflows, costly repairs, late-night callouts for our crews, and potential impacts on the environment.

The recent overflow is a reminder that small choices at home can have a big impact on the wastewater network. Items such as wet wipes, paper towels, sanitary products and cotton buds belong in the bin, not the toilet. Likewise, fats, oils and grease should be allowed to cool before being disposed of in the rubbish, rather than poured down sinks or drains.

By disposing of waste correctly, we can all help reduce the risk of blockages and overflows, protect our environment, and keep the wastewater network running smoothly for our communities.
