Waikato Waters is coming soon - here’s what to expect

You may have heard that our drinking water and wastewater services will be transitioning to Waikato Waters.

This change isn’t new. It follows public consultation through the Local Water Done Well process and the decisions Council made last year about how water services will be managed in the future.

Waikato Waters is a council-owned organisation established by six Waikato councils in response to the Government’s Local Water Done Well legislation. Its purpose is to deliver water services on behalf of those councils.

The transition will take place on 1 October. While that is still a few months away, here’s an overview of what this means for you.

What does this mean right now?

In the first year, there will be no change for customers:

• You will continue to pay for water and wastewater services through your Council rates
• Your charges will remain on your existing rates notice
• You will still contact Council for any queries, faults or service requests

What will change over time?

Looking ahead, some changes will be introduced:

• Water and wastewater charges will eventually move off Council rates and onto a separate bill from Waikato Waters
• This will not mean paying more or being charged twice — only the billing provider will change
• Revenue collected within our district will continue to be invested back into local water services
• Waikato Waters will remain publicly owned by councils
