Message from the Mayor

My thoughts go out to all the people that have been adversely affected by Cyclone Gabrielle over the past few days. While we were definitely affected by the cyclone, we got off quite lightly compared to some other districts around the country. I really feel for all the families that have been devastated by the effects of the cyclone and especially those who have sadly lost loved ones. These communities will take a long to time to recover from this.

I want to acknowledge our staff and the work they’ve done, both in the operations team and out in the field. I’d also like to take the opportunity to thank our local first responders, who are mainly volunteers, for their efforts. Also to our community - for your patience, understanding and for pitching in and helping each other out - that’s what being part of a close knit community is about.

There may still be some trees that have loose branches or are unstable. If you’re concerned about a tree on public property, please call council on 0800 746 467.

I encourage you to continue keeping in touch with your neighbours, including the elderly, as we all cope with adverse events like this differently and sometimes it’s just another weight added onto peoples shoulders in challenging uncertain times.

- Adrienne Wilcock, Matamata-Piako DIstrict Mayor
