Fire prevention can be split into three sections:
The Administration of the Thames Valley Rural Fire District (TVRFD) is achieved through policies for fire prevention, suppression and fire recovery. These polices are aligned with and influenced by statutory requirements under the Forest and Rural Fire Act 1977, The Forest and Rural Fire Regulations 1979 and the National Rural Fire Authority’s Rural Fire Management Code of Practice.
The weather is monitored at six automatic weather stations in or around the region, and the weather information is then used to assess the current and future fire danger. As the fire danger increases, TVRFD’s preparedness levels also increase. As specific levels of Fire Danger are reached, the TVRFD can impose Restricted and Prohibited Fire Seasons.
To ensure the local community are aware of the Fire Season, public notices are placed in the local newspapers and ads are broadcast on local radio stations stating the current situation. At a national level, public awareness is created by the National Rural Fire Authority through the ‘Bernie’ campaign on television.
