Council works with the Ministry for Youth Development and youth service providers in our district to aid youth development.
In 2011 the Ministry for Youth Development teamed up with Council and three youth service providers in our district. A survey was completed by 276 12-24 years olds in our district. As a result of this survey a report was published called Putting Words Into Action. The report highlighted a number of concerns for youth in our district. The main concerns included having nothing to do, a lack of youth friendly spaces and activities, and a lack of youth employment opportunities. As a result of this, the Matamata-Piako Youth Action Plan (pdf, 20kb) was developed to try and address these issues.
In the 2012/13, 2013/14 and 2014/15 financial years Council applied to the Ministry of Youth Development’s Partnership Fund for funding to host three events and for a youth development worker to be employed for each of the three youth service providers. Council was granted $35,000, $51,000 and $18,000 respectively.
Council applied to the Ministry of Youth Development’s Partnership Fund for the 2015/16 financial year and has been granted $15,000 to facilitate the organisation of three youth led events across the district. Council will continue working with local youth service providers - Youth Empowerment Service, Starfish Social Services, Te Ahurei A Rangatahi and the Matamata Youth Aid police officer to deliver these events.
