Your rubbish doesn’t just disappear

Everything we put in the bin has to go somewhere and the choices we make now will affect future costs, services and how much waste ends up in landfill.

So we’re reviewing our Waste Management and Minimisation Plan to make sure our waste services meet the needs of our growing district. The draft plan looks at ways to reduce waste, improve recycling and resource recovery, and plan for the future of our refuse transfer stations.

Our Plan also directs how our waste levy funding can be used, including waste education and communication, policy research and reporting, grants, and infrastructure capital.

Protecting our people, places and services

We’re planning ahead to help Matamata-Piako remain resilient in severe weather events with a Climate Resilience Strategy. By understanding risks, planning ahead and building resilience into future decisions, we can help reduce long-term costs and minimise impacts on the community.

We are also working alongside regional partners, neighbouring councils and key agencies so our approach is coordinated, practical and aligned with wider Waikato planning.

Our Strategy sets out how we can prepare for challenges, continue delivering essential services, and support communities to stay safe and resilient. Before the strategy is finalised, we'd like to hear your views on the proposed direction.
