Tui Mine Clean Up
Tui Mine was opened in 1967 by Norpac Mining Ltd to extract metals, such as copper, lead and zinc, however the mine closed in 1975 when Norpac went into liquidation and Tui Mine was abandoned. In the 2007 Budget, money from the Ministry for the Environment’s Contaminated Sites Remediation Fund was earmarked to start the clean up of Tui Mine. The clean up is now underway, as a joint effort between the Ministry for the Environment (MfE), the landowners (Matamata-Piako District Council (MPDC) and Department of Conservation (DOC)), and Environment Waikato. Representatives of the local iwi, Ngati Rahiri Tumutumu, are also involved in project governance.
For further information about the Tui Mine clean up, visit the Environment Waikato website Tui Road (Access to Tui Mine)
Works at Tui Mine have begun, which will mean increased volumes of heavy vehicles on Tui Road. Council is advising drivers and cyclists to avoid using Tui Road past the residential area where possible. Walking tracks joining on to the mountain road will remain open, with caution signs in place to advise walkers of the work taking place. The work site at the mine will be fenced off, however, walkers need to be aware that there will be increased traffic, especially heavy vehicles on the road, and should keep well clear of the road at all times
