Heritage Trails

Heritage Trails are an initiative of the National Heritage Trails Foundation, which aims to preserve and share the unique history of districts around New Zealand, at the same time as promoting tourism, business and employment opportunities in those districts.

A committee of local historians have identified places/sites of historic interest in the Matamata-Piako District, which make up our Heritage Trails.

Currently, four routes have been mapped out detailing these places of interest around Matamata, Morrinsville and Te Aroha townships, and a district trail, linking the town trails together. These guides are available to purchase from the Council offices and local information centres, or you can view an online guide.
